487 493. This is the number of quality-controlled temperature and salinity profiles, from Argo floats and Ice-Tethered Profilers, on which a new algorithm relies to establish the presence of thermohaline staircases. These stepped structures consisting of mixed layers of typically tens of metres thick are associated with double-diffusive mixing. Read this publication to learn how the algorithm detects subsurface mixed layers and analyses the interfaces in between, where enhanced salt and heat transport take place.
